Call it "the plant of immortality," "the lily of the desert," or "miracle plant," there's no shortage of praise out there for Aloe vera. With soothing, healing and antibacterial properties, aloe has earned a household reputation as one of the world's best-loved natural ingredients. Widely known for its ability to soothe a sunburn, Aloe vera offers heaps of additional benefits for skincare and wellbeing.

Historical Uses of Aloe Vera

Let's start way back at the very beginning. Aloe vera's reputation as a miracle plant started in ancient Egypt. According to Aloe Medical Group, the first written reports of this sacred plant date as far back as 6,000 years ago. In ancient Egypt, the use of Aloe was tied to the pursuit of physical beauty and held in regard due to its anti-aging and antibacterial properties. Both Cleopatra and Nofretete are said to have used the nectar of the Aloe vera plant in their daily skincare routines. Considering Nefertiti was declared "the most beautiful woman who ever lived," we'd say that's a pretty powerful plant!

According to a 2017 paper published in the Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, Aloe made its way into the world of medicine in 4th century B.C, when it was obtained by Greek doctors on the island of Socotra. According to Dr.Indu Mehta's paper, the Aloe vera plant spread to Persia and India in 600 B.C by way of Arab traders. At this time, Aloe gained it's second common nickname "Lily of the Dessert."

The gel-form Aloe vera we know today was popularised in the 1970s by a practicing American pharmacist. According to Mehta's paper, Bill C. Coates dedicated himself to proving that Aloe could be extracted and converted into gel form without losing potency. Today, there are over 400 species of Aloe vera plants grown throughout the world, making it widely available throughout warm regions.

How Aloe Vera Benefits Skin

1. Sunburn Relief  - Aloe's number one claim to fame is its sunburn soothing skills. This powerful plant is packed full of anti-inflammatory properties which provide instant relief for minor sunburns, rashes, and skin irritations. The gel texture of aloe creates a protective layer on the skin to encourage quick and comfortable healing. Not to mention the glorious cooling sensation that this plant delivers. Aloe cools and soothes, delivering a breath of fresh air for sunburned skin!

2. Moisturisation - You know that gross greasy feeling you get when you load up on too much lotion? Well, consider aloe a welcome alternative. Aloe vera gel is quickly absorbed into the skin, deeply penetrating below the surface to restore hydration. Aloe's quick absorption rate means you can apply it often without clogging your pores or cramping your comfort.

3. Healing Cuts - Aloe vera contains healing properties that encourage the reproduction of damaged skin cells. Aloe has been shown to deliver significant results in shortening healing time of minor cuts, scrapes, burns and wounds. Much like for sunburns, the cooling sensation of aloe can provide a welcome relief to stinging cuts and abrasions.

4. Younger Looking Skin - Aren't we all searching for a fountain of youth? While aloe can't literally turn back the hands of time, it can contribute to youthful-looking skin! The Aloe vera plant contains essential nutrients like vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene. It also contains important amino acids and minerals like calcium and magnesium, all of which can encourage healthy younger-looking skin.

5. Prevention of Bacteria - Not only can aloe provide cool relief for cuts and sunburns, but it also creates a barrier to block bacteria from entering the vulnerable area. The plant's antimicrobial properties work to block bacteria from penetrating the surface of the skin, minimizing the risk of infections. Aloe's bacteria-blocking skills make it the perfect ingredient to incorporate in your professional depilatory products. After a professional waxing service, the skin is temporarily put in a vulnerable state, making it more susceptible to infection-causing bacteria.

While waxing can provide long-lasting smoothness, it does temporarily put the skin in a vulnerable state. Any time body hair is removed, some stress is caused on the surrounding skin. While it's totally normal for your clients to see some mild inflammation and irritation immediately after their service, it's important to arm them with the knowledge to heal their skin ASAP.

Pure Aloe vera gel (without harsh alcohol ingredients) can be applied immediately after waxing to encourage healing and prevent bacteria from forming.
